Did you know that many motor vehicle accidents injuries are hidden and are often not detected for months or even years?

Every year, over 6 million people are injured in motor vehicle accidents. Of these injuries, about 3 million are whiplash-related with approximately 23% of these developing into chronic pain.

To realign the spine and neck to heal in the correct position to alleviate chronic pain, we recommend:

  • Chiropractic alignment
  • Massage therapy
  • Ultrasound
  • Cold Laser Therapy
  • When you seek treatment within the first 90 days after a car accident, your insurance will usually cover your treatment without a premium increase.

Also, if your accident was caused by another driver, their insurance will often reimburse you for your treatment expense and time off work, if needed.

While many of the car accidents are minor, the majority of people experience whiplash.

Upon impact, your head might have jerked forward or backward, causing neck strain.

Often, whiplash symptoms won’t appear until 24 hours or even a few days after the accident occurs. Whiplash symptoms include shoulder pain, neck stiffness, headaches, dizziness or lower back pain.

Car Accidents happen with alarming frequency. In fact, according to the Texas DMV, in 2013:

    • A car accident was reported every 71 seconds.
    • 1 person was killed from a car accident every 2 hours and 36 minutes
    • 1 person was injured from a car accident every 2 minutes and 16 seconds.

In 2013, more than 232,000 Texans were injured in car accidents… and over 13,000 of those motor vehicle accidents happened right here in Austin.

The scary thing about car accident injuries, is that they often aren’t obvious or immediate. You could feel fine for hours, days, weeks, even months… and then one day wake up in debilitating pain!

That’s why it’s important that, no matter how you feel or how mild (or severe) the accident you were in seemed to be, make sure you get a thorough examination of your body.

Despite many people going to the ER right away, car accidents cost injured Americans more than $200 billion dollars every year–much of it from lost work!

THE ERs’ job is to make sure you are NOT going to die or that you do NOT have an immediate, life-threatening injury. That is IT. Their job does NOT include checking you out to see if you have injuries that are going to cause you pain, frustration and aggravation the REST of YOUR life.

SOOOOO many patients come in and by looking at their x-rays, we can TELL they were in an accident recently–or even quite a long time ago. These patients ALMOST ALWAYS say. “I went to the emergency room and they told me I was fine” or “The ER said I only had a little whiplash”. Grrrrrrr!

What they were telling you is that you are NOT going to die from your recent injuries. IT is NOT their job to deeply and thoroughly check all of your tendons, ligaments, muscles, joints, etc. that get damaged in accidents from sudden impact. These are injuries that can create joint dysfunction, long term pain, and disability.

Many patients that come in as regular patients with back and neck pain have reported that their current pains all started as a gradual process. At first it was just a bit of pain that came to them as they moved around. And like many of our patients, they thought they were just getting older, or that the pain would eventually go away…

Much of the time this is a process that actually started with TRAUMA. And the most common trauma that puts your body so out-of-whack, is the trauma from being in a motor vehicle accident and not getting treated properly for it.

In an accident, your spine, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments are affected the most…(and occasionally your brain from being bounced around in your skull). The ER doctors and support staff are not trained to thoroughly evaluate these structures, beyond a cursory look for broken bones or possible sprains.

This is a major problem, since your spine is the super highway of your body. It encases the spinal cord which relays all of the intricate signals between the body and mind. It regulates your immune system, sense of balance, and so much more. IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT BACK AND NECK PAIN, IT IS ABOUT your WHOLE body and it’s vitally important systems.

Then there are also your joints. Your joints are vital to your body’s mobility. When even one joint is out of alignment or injured, it can cause stress to the other joints as they try to compensate for the injured joint. This typically leads to having pain or discomfort in other parts of your body and causes a gradual wearing out of the joints (think of knee and hip replacements). This also causes muscular imbalances, and hard wear and tear on your ligaments and tendons.

When any of these intricate body systems are injured, it can affect your body as a whole, on a very profound level. It can disrupt your sleep, cause incredible pain, negatively affect your immune system, and so much more!

That’s one reason why it’s so important to get a second opinion with a chiropractor you trust, because the ER is not designed to make sure your body is functioning OPTIMALLY. Yes, even if the ER gives you a pass by saying, “You only strained your neck and/or a muscle,” it’s important that you get a comprehensive exam. That little strain can lead to a lifetime of aggravating symptoms, including chronic pain and even possible future neck and back surgery–something to be avoided avoid at all costs!

A second important reason you need to get an accurate and detailed report of the injuries you sustained from a car accident, is so you can get fairly compensated in your insurance claim. That means you can’t wait too long to get an in-depth analysis of your true injuries. Quickly seeing a group of professionals who understand the medical-legal aspects of motor vehicle accidents is vital to ensure you are not taken advantage of by an insurance company.

While we wished that car accidents were rare, Active Life Healing Center has been treating patients from car accidents for over 20 years.

Dr. Cynthia Schade, founder of Active Life Healing Center, has often looked at x-rays to find degenerative changes in the spine and joints–all from long ago car accidents that a patient never got treatment for.

After all, they didn’t feel or look injured--so how would they know? The patient has gone years with what they thought were just minor everyday aches and pains, until they became too much and they needed to seek help. At this point, serious damage AND degeneration has often been incurred to the body. (Which could have been prevented if they had been treated immediately after the accident).

However, this can all be avoided! At Active Life Healing center, we thoroughly examine your body to make sure your musculo-skeletal system is in alignment.

The professionals of Active Life healing center give you a complete examination that includes your spine, feet, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, and wrists. Your health, vitality, and lifestyle is far too important to be put at risk with an incomplete examination!

We also work with your other medical and osteopathic doctors that can help if you need immediate pain management. Active Life Healing Center has worked with a wide network of providers for several years. We can work with someone you already see, or if you don’t have one, we can refer you to a great doctor for additional treatment.

    • I really don't know what I would have done without Dr. Schade and the amazing folks at Active Life. At 18 (now 46) I had a bad car wreck and have been to numerous doctor's and chiropractor's for close to 30 years to help solve/manage the pain in my neck and shoulders. Over the 8 years I have been with Dr. Schade, I am finally living without pain and I am on a maintenance schedule that works for me both financially and from a health perspective. Gone are the headaches and the daily struggles of pain. Thank you all - the entire team are helpful, supportive and always there for me.

    • Best Chiropractor in Texas! – Active Life is AWESOME!! This is the first chiropractor that REALLY relieved my symptoms by correcting my original problem. I originally went in to see them due to a rear-end collision I sustained -- I was back to better in no time. The entire staff is great. They even have a special therapist there named Victor who is key in helping your body exercise new muscles to break old patterns of illness. Finally, I have to second another poster about Chris -- he is the *BEST* at what he does -- his massage is amazing and everytime I left there I felt like I had spent the day at the spa. The first time he gave me a massage I almost cried it was so good. They also have a great, caring front desk that really works with you to get well. This is honestly the first time I can say that I've ever looked forward to going to a chiropractor. My treatment is complete now (unlike other chiros who milk your injury forever) and I can say I still feel amazing. I am planning now to set up some maintenance visits so I can stay on the right track...Well done!!
    • I've been going to Dr. Schade's “Active Life Healing Center” for over 20 years now, following her from the original house on 6th St. to her current Brodie Oaks location. This is one remarkable Healer who has always gotten me back on my feet despite my many injuries like whiplash, low back pain, muscle spasms, falls, scoliosis, pinched nerves… and now multiple sclerosis. She takes time to Listen to me, then offers a specific remedy that does the trick for that ailment. One of the modalities that especially helps me is the “Graston” method, which breaks up scar tissue damage. I don't know of any other Clinic doing this, but it is ever so powerful and deeply gratifying! Kudos to Dr. Schade for continuing her quest in seeking out the best, most innovative clinical techniques available. This kind of passion and dedication to both her profession and her clients is rare. It is a personal quality of hers I regard HIGHLY that keeps this Clinic heads and toes above all the rest.
