Therapeutic Massage is a relaxing approach to heal not just the physical body but as well as the person’s emotional and mental health. Massage, when done by a professional therapist, can relieve pain, release stress, and help the mind focus on positive thoughts. However, some people may not fully enjoy its benefits simply because they are clueless on the things that they should be doing before, during and after the massage therapy session. Here are some reminders that we always tell our clients:

How to prepare for a Therapeutic Massage session

Diet – Basically, you don’t want to be bloated on the day you’re going to have the therapeutic massage. So a week before, we advise our patients to drink 8 – 10 glasses of water daily and to avoid caffeinated and alcoholic drinks. Eat fruits instead of chips and artificial sugary snacks. This will help detoxify the inner body and will make the outer body ready for the massage.

Exercise – A little stretching of the arms and legs and some bending will do amazing things for you. Our therapeutic massage technique is designed to bring back proper posture and increase muscle flexibility. By doing simple exercises a few days before the session, you are actually helping yourself avoid discomforts or any painful sensation while the massage is going on.

Be on time – The massage therapist will schedule an appointment with you. Arrive a few minutes before the scheduled time. The massage session may take an hour or more than an hour. Eat your meal before you head to the clinic. When you arrive, you may use the bathroom and then relax in the waiting area. Don’t forget to fill out the forms.

What to expect during a Therapeutic Massage session

The massage therapist will ask you about your health condition and you must be able to give honest and straight answers. This will help the therapist know what sensitive areas of the body must be avoided and what areas are in need of more pressure.

Focus on the therapist’s touch and don’t resist unless it’s causing pain. Inform him if a specific area is feeling too hot or too cold. It could be signs of a serious condition. Don’t hold your breath and let your thoughts flow.

Therapeutic massage should be a relaxing experience. If there is any pain, this is the time that we advise our patients to undergo chiropractic therapy as well. Chiropractic and massage therapies are a good combination to improve the overall health of a person.
